Nonprofit Governance Models
Every new nonprofit comes to a point where the founders realize that they require more hands, more advice and more direction. Many nonprofits establish a board of director at this stage. There are many different boards that are not exactly the same. In fact, there’s a wide spectrum of governance models that can be employed to ensure that your charitable organization is running properly and serves its stated mission.
One of the most well-known models of governance for nonprofits is an advisory model. This allows an executive director to talk with a group of advisors on a regular basis for guidance on the best way to run a non-profit. The governing board could be the same or different from the advisory board subject to agreed-upon terms. The cooperative governance model is another common model. This is a highly democratic structure that distributes power equally among all board members. It is best for organizations that are not legally required to have an executive.
The Policy Board Model has also become very popular. It was created by John Carver, this governance model is an excellent tool for establishing policies that management and the board must abide by.
All of these models are great however, they might not be right for your organization. It is common for nonprofits to have a central governance model, to which they add other models in order to meet their particular needs. This mix of systems can help your organization grow and achieve its goals.
