How to Choose the Right Board Member

boardroom software vs traditional meeting apps

Choosing the right board member is a crucial decision in the creation of your business structure. The board of directors is the face of your business and the actions of the board members can have a major impact on the things you do. If the board is difficult to reach, isn’t attending meetings, or is out of alignment with your company’s values or the rest of the board, it may be time for them to be replaced.

A good board member is one who shares the mission of your organization. Passion for the issues your nonprofit tackles will keep board members committed even after the initial excitement has waned. They should also have a certain level of organizational or business competence and a basic understanding of fundamentals of good business practices.

Look for people of different age groups, ethnicities and experiences to be on your board. This gives your board a diversity and the ability to offer different perspectives to your leadership. Board members must be willing to question assumptions and play the devil’s attorney, even if they are founded on their own experiences.

Ask the potential board members what time they would dedicate to the work of your committees as well as your board. Many people who are interested in joining a board are unaware of the commitment required to take on the role. When vetting candidates, you should be sure to find any other commitments that might affect their ability to be on your board.
